The outer layer of the avocado is called the pericarp or exocarp and consists mostly of water-resistant fibers; the inner layer is called mesocarp and contains most of the nutrients, fats, vitamins, and minerals of an avocado.

While some fruits may be prepared like vegetables, eat avocado raw in salads or sandwiches or used to make dressings and dips such as guacamole dip. Avocados are also high in monounsaturated fat, which makes them a great addition to meals.
