Before you start cooking, it’s important to know how to prepare peppers properly for cooking. The first step is prepping them for use.

You will need a cutting board, a sharp knife, and gloves if you plan on using hot peppers. Start by washing the pepper thoroughly under cool running water.

Cut off the pepper's top and remove all the seeds from inside. When handling hot peppers, wear gloves as they contain capsaicin which can cause irritation or even burning sensations on your skin.

Once prepped, you can begin slicing or dicing your peppers according to your recipe instructions.

Six Helpful Ways to Cook With Peppers

1. How To Roast Peppers

Roasting peppers is easy and doesn't require many ingredients or tools. Here's what you'll need:

  • Peppers (any variety)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, for seasoning
  • A baking sheet
  • Roast at 400 degrees
How to roast peppers

Step 1: Begin by washing your peppers under cool running water. Once clean, cut off the tops, remove any seeds, and discard the stems. Cut each pepper into quarters or halves if desired.

Step 2: Place your cleaned peppers on a baking sheet and rub them lightly with olive oil until they are evenly coated. Sprinkle them with salt and pepper as desired.

Step 3: Place the baking sheet in the oven on the center rack and roast for 20-30 minutes or until the skin is slightly charred and the peppers are tender when pierced with a fork or knife. You may need to adjust the time depending on the size of the pepper pieces, so check every 10 minutes or so for doneness.

Step 4: Once finished roasting, remove from oven carefully using oven mitts/towels/potholders as hot baking sheets can cause serious burns.

Allow roasted peppers to cool slightly before handling, as they will still be very hot.

Saute The Peppers

Heat up a large skillet over medium heat and add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil (or enough oil so that there is an even layer across the bottom).

How to saute the peppers

When the oil is hot enough—you should hear it sizzle when a drop or two of water is added—add your sliced peppers in an even layer across the pan and season with salt and pepper (and any other spices).

Let cook for 3-5 minutes until they start to soften slightly before flipping each slice over with tongs or a spatula and cooking for an additional 3-5 minutes until softened but still slightly crunchy

2. Grilling The Peppers

If you want to add a delicious smoky flavor to your meals, grilling peppers is a great way to do so. Grilling peppers can bring out their natural sweetness and adds a unique flavor to whatever dish you are preparing.

But it’s important to know how to properly grill the peppers to get the best results. Let’s take a look at how to do this.

How to grill peppers

Grilling the peppers makes for an easy recipe and an excellent side dish.

Preparing the Grill
The first step is preparing your grill. Preheat your grill on medium-high heat and oil the grates lightly with vegetable or canola oil using a paper towel. This will help prevent the peppers from sticking or burning while cooking. Use either charcoal grill or use a smokers and place the peppers closest to the fire.

Grill the Peppers
Once your grill is ready, place the peppers on the grates and cook for about 8 minutes, flipping them halfway through. You should start seeing some charring and blistering—this is when they are almost done.

Grilling Tips
When grilling whole peppers, it’s best to use thick-skinned bell peppers, such as red bell peppers or yellow bell peppers, because they tend to hold up better on the grill than thinner-skinned varieties. Tip: You can grill any kind of pepper.

It’s also important not to overcook them; if you cook them too long, they will become mushy and lose their texture and flavor.

The best way to tell if they are done is by checking for charring or blistering on the outside of each pepper before removing them from your grill.

Tip: Green bell peppers have less overall flavor.

3. Stuffing The Peppers

Making Stuffed Peppers
The first step is to preheat your oven to 350°F. After that, cut your peppers in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and membranes. Now it’s time to fill each pepper with your desired filling ingredients.

How to stuff the peppers

Stuffed bell peppers are a classic easy weeknight meal plan. The use of red peppers, green peppers, and yellow peppers makes for a beautiful presentation.

For this recipe, we suggest using 1 cup of cooked rice as the base ingredient for stuffing your peppers. You can add any combination of vegetables, such as onions, mushrooms, carrots, and more.

Next, add diced tomatoes, ½ cup of grated cheese (such as mozzarella), and ¼ cup of tomato sauce. Mix all these ingredients until fully combined before spooning them into the pepper halves. Try adding some red pepper flakes to the sauce for a nice kick of spice.

Finally, sprinkle some extra cheese on top of each pepper half before baking in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

4. Making Salsa From The Peppers

Making Pepper Salsa
Making salsa is easy. All you need is a food processor or blender and some fresh ingredients such as chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic, cilantro, jalapenos (for added heat), and diced poblanos.

How to make pepper salsa

Pulse everything together until it reaches your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste for added flavor. You can also add other spices like chili powder or cumin if you want an extra kick of flavor.

Once your salsa is finished, serve it with chips or use it as a topping on tacos or burritos. It also goes great with grilled fish or chicken - endless possibilities.

5. Adding Peppers To Soups For Depth of Flavor

Whether you’re cooking up a classic vegetable soup or a hearty chili, peppers can help take the flavor of your soup to the next level. Here are some tips on how to add peppers for maximum flavor.

Adding peppers to soups for depth of flavor

Choosing the Right Pepper
The type of pepper you choose will depend on how much heat and flavor you want in your soup. If you’re looking for subtle flavor, try using bell peppers, as they have a sweet taste with just a hint of spice.

Learn how to cook bell peppers in the oven low and slow wrapped in aluminum foil. The process steams them and sweetens them further. If cooking them directly in the soup, stirring frequently will help make sure nothing sticks to the bottom and burns.

For more heat, opt for jalapenos or habaneros. You can also experiment with different colors of bell peppers, such as red, orange, and yellow, to give your soup an interesting pop of color.

6. Using Peppers In Salads
