Each substitute has a unique flavor and texture that can enhance a recipe.

When cooking with any of these types of tomato substitutes, it is important to remember that they will not have the same flavor as fresh tomatoes.

This is why it is important to experiment with different flavors and seasonings to find the perfect combination for your dish. Who knows, you may just create a new favorite dish!

If you're looking for a savory option, you could try using sun-dried tomatoes or eggplant. Or, if you're looking for something with a bit of sweetness, you could try using roasted cherry tomatoes or red bell pepper even carrots work great.

Best Tomato Substitutes

If you can't find fresh tomatoes or don't like the taste of them, there are plenty of tomato substitutes you can use in your recipes. Here are some of the most popular options:

Red Bell Pepper

The first option is Red Bell pepper, often considered the best tomato substitute.

Bell peppers offer a similar texture and flavor but slightly less acidity. Bell peppers can be used in sauces, soups, stews, stir-fries and salads. When substituting bell peppers for tomatoes, make sure to use a variety that is not too sweet or overly ripe.

Red, yellow, and orange bell peppers are all good choices. Green bell peppers may be too bitter for some recipes.

Chef Tip: Our suggestion is to roast it. This can be done by slicing the bell pepper into thin strips and then roasting it in the oven at a high temperature until it is slightly charred. This will give the bell pepper a smoky flavor that can enhance the flavor of a dish.

This can also be done over a gas range, using the open flame to char the outside of the bell pepper. Then place into a brown paper bag to steam for 5 minutes. The exterior skin on the bell pepper will easily come off, leaving you with the perfect ingredient.

Eggplant

Eggplant is another great option for a tomato substitute. Eggplant can be roasted, grilled, or even fried. It has a fleshy texture that works well as a replacement for tomatoes in many dishes.

One thing to remember when using eggplant as a tomato substitute is that it can absorb a lot of oil, so be sure to use less oil than you would normally use when cooking with eggplant.

If frying, make sure the oil is hot enough. The higher oil temperature protects the eggplant from becoming oily by causing a seal around the eggplant quicker from the high temp.

Zucchini

Zucchini and squash are also great options for a tomato substitute. These vegetables can be used in much the same way as eggplant. They can be roasted, grilled, or fried. Zucchini and squash also have a fleshy texture that works well as a replacement.

Canned Tomatoes

Canned tomatoes are a great option when needing to use tomatoes in a hurry. Just make sure to drain and rinse them before using them. They are often packaged with too much sodium, so rinsing them will be very helpful in the reduction of sodium and controlling the salt level.

For extra flavor, opt for fire-roasted tomatoes.

Roasted Tomatoes

Roasting tomatoes brings out their natural sweetness and makes them an excellent topping for pizzas and pasta. The options are limitless. Opt for slow roasting to bring out all the flavor.

Juicing carrots for a tomato replacement ingredient works very well. The flavor profile isn't all that far away from a tomato.

Tomato Paste
